Facebook Profile Picture Overlays

We recently uploaded two Facebook profile picture overlays for public use. The logos can be placed onto any photo you want to use as your profile picture. To access them, follow the steps below. *Step 1:* Go to your Facebook profile. Hover your mouse over your profile picture and click on: *Step 2:* A new window will appear and at the top, one of your options will be: Click on this. *Step 3:* In the top left corner, a search bar will appear. Type in “Clarkson University” and give it a moment to load. Town of Potsdam Comprehensive Plan Meetings

Residents of the town of Potsdam are invited to workshops to help develop the municipality’s comprehensive plan. The ISE hopes that Clarkson will be well represented in this process. We have been working with the town of Potsdam in an effort to align the comprehensive plan with the NYS Climate Smart Communities program <http://www.dec.ny.gov/energy/50845.html>. Working with our local municipalities on this program is our strategy for fulfilling Clarkson’s climate resiliency (adaptation) commitment. There will be three workshops that the town has organized. Each meeting will be held in the town hall from 7:00 – 8:30pm. · 1/17 - Housing and Neighborhoods / Quality of life · 1/24 - Business and Economic Development / Land Use · 1/31 - Infrastructure and Energy At each workshop participants will be asked to draft statements about the current state, future goals, and implementation strategies for each topic. Update on Federal Tax Reform Legislation Status

Sent on behalf of Kelly Chezum <%20kchezum(a)clarkson.edu>, VP for External Relations and Kerop Janoyan <kjanoyan(a)clarkson.edu>, Dean of the Graduate School Colleagues and Graduate Students, The most recent proposed Federal Tax Reform legislation has generated much discussion among faculty, staff and graduate students about the impact on the higher education sector. While the legislation can still be fluid until it is voted upon by both the House & Senate, and signed by President Trump, what we have now as information from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities on what has been presented is as follows for what was retained, meaning no changes to their current status: *Student Aid & Family Benefits* · Student Loan Interest Deduction was RETAINED. · The American Opportunity Tax Credit was RETAINED · Lifetime Learning Credit was RETAINED · IRC Sec. 117(d)5 graduate student tuition remission benefits were RETAINED. · IRC Sec. 117(d) college employee tuition remission benefits were RETAINED. · IRC Sec. 127 – employer-provided tuition assistance – was RETAINED. *Charitable Giving & Institutional Benefits * The Charitable Deduction was RETAINED, however, the overall effects of the other tax rate reductions may influence charitable giving so the impact is still unknown. The IRA Charitable Rollover was RETAINED. A new Endowment Tax on certain private colleges and universities using the Senate formula of $500,000 per FTE was ADDED. The tax itself was LOWERED from the original proposed 2% to 1.4%. Through six rewrites from its original introduction in the House, the tax transitioned from affecting 250 private colleges to affecting approximately 32 private colleges. Based on the size of our endowment and the number of students we have, Clarkson is not among those 32 institutions at this time. In other legislative proposals, it may be prudent to continue to understand and be aware of what is included in the PROSPER Act, which reauthorizes the Higher Education Act last updated in 2008 (Read More Here <http://www.acenet.edu/advocacy/Pages/Higher-Education-Act.aspx> with links from the American Council On Education) as it again has some provisions that will change how federal work study and financial aid is administered to students including borrowing limits on federal loans. You may also be following the next steps following the FCC decision to end net neutrality and sharing your opinion with your elected officials. New York State is among those States that has been reported on its plan to sue the FCC over the decision. If you have questions, please feel free to reach me. Federal Legislative Season Greetings - Ways to Contact your Representatives

Federal Legislative Season Greetings, In my role as VP for External Relations, a number of Clarkson faculty and staff have approached me about how to contact federal representatives regarding the various bills and legislative actions occurring in Washington DC right now. The easiest and most effective way to reach them is via phone. The numbers as well as e-mail addresses and forms are at https://whoaremyrepresentatives.org/ to express your opinion directly. These are a number of issues under immediate review that are good to be on our radar as members of the higher education community. Your individual opinions and experiences on how these issues impact you, our students and our sector do matter to our elected officials. As part of a major Federal Tax Reform initiative to rewrite the USA tax code, there are numerous changes being proposed that will lead to personal financial changes for students, families and our employees, including the graduate students who receive benefits for teaching and research work done at the University. These are still “in committee” being hashed out so not a done deal*.* The American Council on Education keeps it comprehensive, easy-to-read digest <http://www.acenet.edu/Pages/Higher-Education-and-Tax-Reform.aspx#tabContent…> of the proposed changes up to date and includes ways to express your opinion with various links. Congress is moving quickly to also move PROSPER forward (Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform), which is a bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Authorization Act last updated in 2008. The mark up of the bill begins today at 10am --- again there are a number of proposed changes that will impact the availability of aid to our undergraduate and graduate students, and we understand there may be amendments proposed on the mobility of transfer credits across the sector. Graduate students in the current proposed version could lose work-study eligibility and have limits placed on federal loans. Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, etc. The FCC has said it will vote on whether to keep or repeal these protections on December 14th. This could result in Internet traffic to/from the University being relegated to 'slow lanes' unless the University pays for prioritization of its traffic. Hi Sue, It would be most appropriate if the School of Business handle the selling of these items. I have recently posted things on Craigslist for off-campus selling and I have used General_Discussion(a)lists.clarkson.edu for items for University use only. When money is exchanged, the individual simply writes a check to Clarkson University and we take the check with deposit slip to the cashier in Graham. The items may have to be moved to another location until they sell. Since these items have limited interest, you might want to just call around to salons in the area...I think I would consider North Country This Week, too! Hope that helps. New Drawing Club Looking for Members

Drawing as Meditation A new Drawing Club is looking for a few more members. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5 pm in the Science Center. The club is open to everyone – both beginners and experienced artists (and everyone in between) -- but space is limited. We will be following (at least for the first year) the book “The Drawing Club of Improbable Dreams: How to Create a Club for Art” by Cat Bennett. Cat says, “Our goal is to explore openly rather than try to make finished pieces of art . . . to experiment, try out new ways of drawing, and make some good mistakes . . . The exercises are designed so that we don’t know how things will turn out until we do them . . . Drawing can be a meditation, a place to simply be. Most of us find this to be a very peaceful practice. In this peaceful state we can begin to watch our minds and notice the thoughts that appear. Former Clarkson University Research Chemist Dr. Stanka Kratohvil Passed Away September 9, 2017

The Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science is sad to announce that Dr. Stanka Kratovil passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2017. Dr. Kratohvil was a Clarkson University Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science from 1967 to 1993. Along with her husband, Dr. Josip Kratohvil, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Clarkson, Stanka has been a member of the Clarkson family for many years. Our thoughts and best wishes are sent to Professor Kratohvil and his children and grandchildren. *STANKA KRATOHVIL* *Dr. Stanka Kratohvil, 89, of Potsdam, NY passed away at her home on September 9, 2017. * *Stanka was born on May 30, 1928 in Zagreb, Croatia to Ivo and Irma Babic. She attended public schools in Zagreb. She received her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Zagreb in 1952 and her doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry in 1956. She served as a junior faculty member at the University of Zagreb for several years. * *In 1952, she married Josip Kratohvil. Together they immigrated to the United States in 1960. For 25 years, she worked at Clarkson University as a research chemist. She is the co-author of 25 scientific papers in the area of colloid chemistry. * *She had a lifelong desire for knowledge and was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music. She loved to entertain and was an excellent cook often preparing traditional Croatian meals for her family, friends and visitors from other countries.* *She is survived by Josip, her husband of 65 years; her daughters, Vlasta Pinkston and Doris Walls; five grandchildren, Megan and Eric Pinkston; Cameron, Harrison and Caleb Walls. * *As per Stanka’s request, there will not be a service.
